Who We Are

Jumper Networks, Inc.

Our Story
Jumper was born out of frustration and a limited budget. Back in 2007, while working on a consulting engagement for a large life sciences company, Steve Perry came to the inevitable conclusion that Intranet search was utterly useless. He was tasked with "fixing" the search problem. When he delved into the detail behind the numerous “search sucks” statements, he found two common areas of deficiency:

   1. Metadata – basically the complete or almost complete lack of it attached to the organizations content and data
   2. Irrelevant search results – not a deficiency in search engine technology but in the management of search in general, and the configuration of the search tool in particular.

With a limited budget the task seemed impossible. This common underlying problem is difficult to fix. Metadata exists with legacy content and data. Updating all metadata is a duanting task. Under pressure they came up with a very novel and innovate idea. Why not let the users update the metadata? Tagging enterprise content and data much like users do on the web.

A few months later Jumper 2.0 was ready and quickly became a huge hit with users and the result proved to be quite unexpected. Search was slowly being improved but discovery was radically transformed.

Search is a poor tool for discovery. This is a functional limitation. Users may not know that specific content exists or could be useful, and search cannot reveal this to them. The concept of enabling discovery is key to successfully leveraging information assets. As good as your search gets with improved metadata, search does not surface interesting content or data before you know that you need it. Applying social bookmarking aspects was valuable because it exposed information that users would never have guessed that they cared about.
